03:17. You're lying awake. Not because you're worried — not about anything specific, anyway. Not because of noise. Just awake. For an hour now.

Sometimes you think about things that happened yesterday. Sometimes about nothing at all. And still: no sleep.

If you work shifts and lie awake at night, it's usually not about you. It's because your internal clock and the outside world are no longer running in sync.

The circadian rhythm — your internal clock

Everyone has an internal clock — a circadian rhythm. It doesn't just regulate when you're tired and when you're awake, but also body temperature, hormone levels, hunger and digestion. Everything is coordinated.

This clock is synchronized with light. Light in the morning → awake. Dark in the evening → sleep. That's how it's worked for millions of years.

Shift work breaks this rhythm. Not once, like jet lag. Permanently. Your internal clock tries to adjust — but never fully manages to, because the shift schedule keeps changing, or because social commitments on the weekend push everything out of sync again.

The result: Your clock runs against you. When you want to sleep, your body says: now is wake time. When you have to be awake, your body says: now you should be sleeping.

At 3 AM, body temperature is at its lowest point. That sounds like sleep territory — and it is, for people with a normal rhythm. For shift workers who just woke up or have been lying awake for hours, this temperature low point is often the moment of worst sleep.

On top of that come cortisol fluctuations, which are more irregular in shift workers than in people with a stable rhythm — along with occasional mini cortisol peaks that can wake you up without you even noticing.

What you can do

You won't be able to fully repair the rhythm as long as you work shifts. But you can stabilize it.

Fixed sleep times — even if they're unusual — help your internal clock more than variable times that feel "more natural." Darkness, cool temperatures and rituals aren't tips for bad sleepers. They're the foundation for anyone working against their biology.
