It's 2 AM. You want something sweet. Not because you're hungry. Not because you ate too little earlier. Just because — sweet.
That's not a character flaw. That's biology.
The reward system on night shift
Your brain has a reward system — dopaminergic circuits that fire in response to quick energy. Sugar triggers dopamine. That's evolutionarily sound: sweet food used to mean energy, safety, survival.
At night — especially with sleep deprivation and shift work — these circuits become overactive. At the same time, the prefrontal cortex is underactive: the part of your brain that says "you don't actually need that." The result: the impulsive part wins.
Studies show: people getting less than 6 hours of sleep consume 300–500 kcal more per day on average than well-rested people — and disproportionately choose sugary, fatty food while doing it.
This isn't a discipline issue. It's a contest between two parts of your brain — and under sleep deprivation, the impulsive part structurally has more influence.
What you can do about it
Don't fight it — prepare for it. If you know you'll crave something sweet around 2 AM, have an option ready that satisfies the impulse without spiking your blood sugar. A few dates. Some dark chocolate (70%+). A small glass of milk.
Protein earlier in the shift. A protein-rich snack around the middle of your shift measurably reduces sugar cravings in the second half. Not perfect — but noticeable.
No empty access. What isn't there won't be eaten. If the vending machine in the break room is your only food option, you're biologically at a disadvantage. Bring a pre-packed alternative.
